I will never forget how it felt to sit in a classroom as a kid and not understand...

A note from Jessica, Founder of The Learning Room

It took me a long time to make peace with the fact I learn differently than others. But my experience has been one of the biggest assets in my work as an educator. I became a teacher to reach students like me. But after four years in the classroom, I realized I could make more of an impact outside of it.

That’s when I decided to transition into virtual, one-on-one tutoring and coaching. It allowed me to focus on students’ mental and emotional health and helping them discover their learning styles. I can talk with each of my students about what they are thinking and feeling, and I can easily connect with them and identify with their situation.

As The Learning Room has grown, I’ve sought out experienced and talented educators that have a heart for struggling students just like I do. You can meet them here! We go above and beyond to cater to each student's specific needs. Our goal to make each students’ educational journey a positive one, and above all else, make sure they know they are not alone.

About us

At The Learning Room, we believe that mental and emotional health is more important than grades. When students aren't meeting expectations in core areas such as reading and math, they experience a wide range of emotions - from feeling frustrated and defeated, to alone and incapable. It becomes a self-fulling cycle that continues and often worsens until it's broken, which can lead to feelings of hopelessness.

Despite how dire the situation may seem, these struggles CAN be resolved through 1:1, personalized instruction from an academic coach who will develop a custom plan based on the student's needs and learning style. Our blended, holistic approach addresses both the academic and the mental components of learning. This method, combined with the experience, expertise, and compassion of our academic coaches results in steady and oftentimes drastic improvements in your student’s performance and attitude toward school.

Our holistic approach also extends to our students’ families. We know how school struggles can impact you as a parent, and we want you to know we’re here for you, too! Partnering with The Learning Room will relieve the stress and frustration you're experiencing and help restore a healthy parent-child relationship and family dynamic. Your child will become more confident, more adaptable to change, and will end the school day smiling and looking forward to the next school day.

Are you ready to turn the tension and tears into smiles and success? Take a look around, and book a time for a personalized assessment so we can learn more about your situation and see if we’re a fit!

Our Approach

Studies show that traditional tutoring and online programs are generally ineffective for students who are below grade level or struggling academically.

Here's how we are able to consistently help so many students make rapid academic growth:

We are results focused.

Surprisingly, not all tutors or academic coaches focus on measureable progress, which is why we have families come to us after trying other options. We identify why your child is struggling, and we create targeted instruction to help your child catch up and solve the problem for good. We also want to get your child there quickly, so that they can graduate from needing long term tutoring or coaching.

We Tailor Lesson Plans and Academic Instruction  for your child's specific needs and learning style.

Most tutors and franchises use a cookie cutter approach to academic growth, meaning that all children at a certain grade level are doing the same lessons in the program. This wastes time - your child may be in tutoring several hours per week, but the lessons aren't actually addressing their needs. We create custom to your child instruction based on their needs and their learning style. Also, since we are certified teachers, we know how to observe a student to learn the small shifts needed to help them succeed.

We are Certified Teachers and academic growth experts.

Most franchises hire hourly staff to help your child, meaning that they actually aren't trained in teaching your child. And, even if you're working with a teacher after school or during the summer, most teachers do not have the specific expertise in helping struggling students to fill in learning gaps. And, we have yet to find another tutor, teacher, or program that has an assessment that identify exactly why a child is struggling. (many programs use assessments to place your child into a grade level, but these assessments are not showing why a child is behind, and they aren't used to curate a specific lesson plan.)

We care - a lot.

Our mission is to help students make actual progress, because we know how life changing it is for a child to go from struggling to successful.

Sure, we could make more money and see more students by creating a generic program (like the popular franchises), but we know what actually works in helping a struggling child succeed.

We could also hire less qualified tutors and coaches and charge less per hour- but we choose only to hire the best and deliver the highest quality instruction to our students.

We go the extra mile to ensure that our students are making true progress and growth.

Our Approach:
Academic Growth for a Lifetime of Learning Success

Why Flashcards and
Traditional Tutoring isn't working
(and what we do instead)

Video 1 Key Points:

  • Academic Growth requires an individualized approach.

  • Most big tutoring companies don’t offer an individual approach.

  • Your child needs to fill in the gaps to have a solid foundation for growth.

  • Franchise companies use assessments to place your child in their curriculum.

  • We use assessments to customize an individualized growth plan for your child.

  • We make it fun too, so your kiddo looks forward to working with us!

Our Approach: How we help our students achieve rapid academic growth.

Video 2 Key Points:

  • We specialize in closing academic gaps as quickly as possible.

  • We use our unique assessment to get to the root of the problem.

  • Not all academic problems show on the surface.

  • We don’t just focus on the academic lessons. We consider their stress level and their time management skills, and we work that into our lessons so that we’re addressing your child as a whole and supporting them rather than solely focusing on academics.

Combining Academic Instruction with Academic Coaching - The Key to Long Term Student Success and Confidence.

  • We design our interventions to help your child graduate from our services

  • Our ultimate goal is to help your child develop the skills to graduate from our services and succeed long-term.

Jessica has helped my son bring up his reading and math levels, but has also helped his confidence soar! I’ve watched him be able to connect with another adult and he has found a new love for reading, not just for school assignments but for fun!! This is our second school year working with Jessica and plan on continuing each year! Thank you Jessica for your love and passion for teaching.

TaCora DeVore-Freeman

Jessica is an amazing teacher. My daughter used to struggle with math. She would cry while doing her homework. Jessica has worked with my daughter to close learning gaps, build confidence, and stamina to stay focused on problems. My daughter is excelling in math now, and says it is her favorite subject. Amazing!

Joanie Lane

Jessica was able to get my son to believe that he COULD write. We've been struggling with his writing since third grade, and now that he's in high school there are many writing demands. I seriously did not know how we were going to get him through. Jessica was able to break it down into a formula his brain could process. No more tears when he has to write! thank you Jessica!!!
